July 2025 electric vehicle (EV) sales data is now live on our EV Market Dashboard. With federal tax credits for new and used EVs set to expire on September 30, attention is now on how the market responds in the weeks leading up to the deadline and in the months that follow. Below are three eye-catching data stories from July.
First, nearly 10.9 percent of all light-duty vehicles sold in July were EVs. Almost 137,000 light-duty EVs were sold nationwide during the month, representing a 12 percent increase over July 2024, when sales totaled over 122,000. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) remained the dominant choice, accounting for nearly 81 percent of all EV sales. Notably, July marked the third consecutive month of growth, signaling that EV adoption is holding strong throughout the summer.
Second, while Tesla still holds a commanding share of the EV market, other automakers are gaining ground. Tesla continued to lead in sales in July, reporting more than 47,000 EVs in July and capturing 34 percent of the EV market. Yet, recent trends are signaling that the company’s grip on the EV market is weakening. This year has been particularly turbulent for Tesla as it has reported significant year-over-year declines of 5 percent in Q1 and 12 percent in Q2.
Meanwhile, as Tesla reports a slump in both sales and profit, other automakers are steadily gaining traction. General Motors sold nearly 15,000 EVs in July, claiming 11 percent of EV sales and 16 percent of the overall vehicle market. Its Chevrolet Equinox EV stood out as a strong performer, with more than 8,000 sales and becoming the third best-selling EV model of the month behind Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3.
Hyundai also had a strong showing in July, selling nearly 14,000 EVs and accounting for over 10 percent of EV sales and 12 percent of the total vehicle market. The automaker’s Ioniq 5 remains a popular model, emerging as the fifth most sold EV during July with nearly 6,000 sales.
Third, in 14 states including the District of Columbia, EVs accounted for more than 10 percent of all vehicle sales. EV adoption is becoming increasingly pronounced at the state level, with several states’ EV market share crossing into double digits as depicted in the chart below.
