The Hill recently published two op-eds that highlight the ongoing debate in states over the use of VW settlement funds. The first op-ed from the Sierra Club argues the Environmental Mitigation Trust is a rare opportunity to transform the transportation sector through electrification. Gina from the Sierra Club effectively makes the case on the short and long term benefits of using these funds to deploy EV charging stations and electrify medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. The second op-ed from the Diesel Technology Forum says states should instead use their funding to replace old diesel with new diesel.

Reducing NOx emissions is the main objective of the Trust and states can use these funds to make a down payment on the sizeable investments needed to clean the air of metro regions nationwide. Here’s hoping more voices are heard that encourage states to take concrete steps that benefit the environment in the near and long term through greater transportation electrification.
