On March 21, 2019, the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission (PUC) approved Hawaiian Electric Company’s plans to offer time-of-use charging rates to encourage the adoption and integration of electric commercial buses on the islands of Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii. The special rates will be available for up to 20 bus fleet customers and are designed to encourage midday charging to utilize solar energy generation.
The pilot program will run for 5 years and offers up to 25 percent reduced prices for midday charging. Hawaiian Electric anticipates high growth in the electric bus sector and expects to see 130 electric buses added to both public and private fleets over the course of the pilot. This pilot program will help facilitate the state’s goals to achieve 100 percent renewable public and private ground transportation by 2045.
